Facing Pages – International Biennale on Independent Magazines

| March 17, 2014 | 3 Comments

Facing Pages is the leading biennale on independent magazines in Europe. During several days the city centre of Arnhem will be transformed into a free haven for magazine makers and lovers. Facing Pages will host a symposium with lectures and magazine presentations, exhibitions, parties and more to celebrate the power of print!

Facing Pages, the international Biennale on independent magazines takes place from March 28th until April 7th in Arnhem, the Netherlands. This year the biennale kicks off with a symposium, an exhibition, magazine releases, a pop up store and parties to celebrate the power of print.

The independent magazine is flourishing worldwide like never before. More and more designers, writers and artists publish their own magazines telling the stories they personally relate to. In contradiction to mainstream major publishing houses they create beautiful issues with passion and a drive to share on printed matter.

Symposium March 28th-29th

The symposium is the beating heart of the biennale. Titled ‘Make Magazines Not War’, Facing Pages invites renown designers and editors to the stage to talk about the power of print. Inspired by the hippies that once used the slogan Make Love Not War as a protest to the establishment, Facing Pages looks at the independent magazine as a tool for change in the general way of thinking, acting and sharing ideas in contemporary culture. Two attitudes form the basis of the seminar; Activism and Escapism. Both attitudes underline a necessity for making magazines; to mobilise, to question, to share thoughts and views with like minded people.

Simon Esterson (Eye Magazine), Cathy Olmedillas (Anorak), Francesco Franchi (Designing News), Peter Bil’ak (Works That Work), Besa Luci (Kosovo 2.0), Ibrahim Nehme (The Outpost), Patrick Waterhouse (Colors), Baron, Another Escape, Soigneur ,Das Magazin and more.

Exhibition March 28th- April 7th

Facing Pages will host several exhibitions and magazine releases, showcasing the best, weirdest, controversial and uncommon magazines in the world. Everyone is browsing through magazines, showing copies to each other and getting inspired in a very relaxing environment. So join us in the infinite browsing through a 100+ magazines in a relaxing atmosphere. Special selections in the exhibition are made by O.K. Parking, Magpile and Athenaeum News Centre
